The disease is caused by fungi belonging to the order Pyrenulales. The infection is characterized by the development of perithecia within the host's bark. This type of colonization often leads to necrotic processes or physical obstruction of gas exchange, which weakens the plant's natural defense mechanisms.
The range of affected plants includes various fruit trees, shrubs, and ornamental species. High humidity, shade, and poor aeration are the primary conditions that facilitate the development and spread of Naetrocymbaceae. Trees already stressed by drought or poor soil conditions are significantly more susceptible to these fungal growths.
