Description
Naevala is a genus of ascomycete fungi belonging to the Naevaliaceae family, which causes specific necrotic lesions on plants, primarily affecting the leaf blades. This disease is classified among the leaf spot infections and typically manifests through the formation of necrotic areas that eventually lead to tissue death and premature leaf drop.
The causal agents of the disease are fungi of the genus Naevala. These are specialized pathogens that colonize host tissues and develop their fruiting bodies (apothecia) directly beneath the epidermis of the host plant. As the fungus grows, it releases toxins that degrade cell walls, resulting in the characteristic spotting and eventual necrosis of the leaf tissue.
The disease most frequently impacts trees and shrubs, particularly alder species and various deciduous plants. Initial symptoms include the emergence of small brown or grey spots which expand over time. As the spores mature, small dots appear on the surface of these spots, representing the fungus's fruiting bodies breaking through the leaf epidermis.
Fungal development is favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures. The pathogen spreads primarily through ascospores dispersed by wind or rain splashes. The fungus overwinters in fallen, infected leaves, which serve as the primary reservoir for the subsequent growing season.
To mitigate the spread of Naevala and protect plant health, implement the following control measures:
- Routine collection and destruction (burning or deep burial) of fallen leaves during the autumn period.
- Pruning and thinning of dense plant populations to improve air circulation within the canopy.
- Applying prophylactic fungicide treatments at the beginning of the season when initial symptoms appear.
- Enhancing overall plant vigor through proper fertilization and site management.
