Naevala perexigua is a fungal pathogen belonging to the order Helotiales. This fungus is known for its parasitic lifestyle, primarily affecting the foliage of specific woody plants. It is considered an important agent in the development of necrotic spots on host leaves, which can lead to significant aesthetic and physiological damage to plants.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are plants within the Ericaceae family, particularly rhododendrons. While the damage might seem localized at first, persistent infection can lead to chronic stress in the host plant, making it more susceptible to other secondary pests and environmental stressors over time.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as small, distinct leaf spots. As the fungus matures, small, dark fruiting bodies known as apothecia develop within these spots. These structures are often visible to the naked eye as minute dots. If left untreated, the infected leaves will eventually chlorose, become necrotic, and drop prematurely, leading to defoliation.
