Description
Nakatea is a significant fungal disease affecting agricultural crops, primarily rice, caused by the pathogen Nakatea sigmoidea (formerly classified as Leptosphaeria salvinii). This fungus is a primary cause of stem rot, a condition that compromises the structural integrity of the crop and significantly reduces grain yield.
The disease primarily targets the lower nodes and sheaths of the plant stems. By invading the vascular tissues, the fungus disrupts the uptake and translocation of water and essential nutrients, leading to physiological weakening of the plant and pre-harvest lodging in heavily infested fields.
Typical symptoms manifest as dark, water-soaked spots on the leaf sheaths near the water line. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand and darken, eventually turning into necrotic patches. Internally, the stem tissue disintegrates, and characteristic black, seed-like structures known as sclerotia develop, which serve as the primary survival mechanism for the pathogen.
The development and spread of Nakatea are heavily influenced by environmental factors, particularly stagnant water and high temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C. High humidity levels at the soil-water interface facilitate the germination of sclerotia, while excessive nitrogen fertilization further encourages the susceptibility of the plants to this fungal invasion.
Managing this disease requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Proactive measures include:
- Sanitation through the removal and destruction of crop residues.
- Deep plowing to bury sclerotia deep in the soil where they cannot germinate effectively.
- Careful management of water levels and nitrogen input.
- Application of approved systemic fungicides when environmental monitoring indicates a high risk of infection.
