Nalanthamala is a genus of ascomycetous fungi responsible for various necrotic diseases in plants. These pathogens primarily colonize the vascular tissue and bark of woody plants, disrupting essential nutrient transport and leading to localized or systemic decay of the host plant.
The disease affects a wide range of fruit-bearing trees and ornamental species. Infection typically occurs through wounds caused by pruning, environmental factors such as frost cracks, or insect activity, which provide an entry point for fungal spores into the plant's structural tissues.
The visual symptoms of a Nalanthamala infection include the formation of sunken cankers on stems and branches. Over time, these lesions may expand and girdle the stem, causing wilting, leaf yellowing, and eventual dieback of the distal foliage. Under humid conditions, the pathogen often produces characteristic sporulation structures on the bark surface.
