Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Nalanthamala vermoesenii (formerly known as Gliocladium vermoesenii). This pathogen belongs to the group of Ascomycetes and is a significant threat to palm species globally. It primarily causes severe decay of plant tissues, commonly referred to as pink rot, which can lead to the systemic decline and death of host plants in both nursery and landscape settings.
A wide variety of palm species are susceptible to this infection, including Chamaedorea, Phoenix, Washingtonia, and Cocos nucifera. The pathogen often exploits entry points created by mechanical damage, pruning wounds, or environmental stress, such as frost injury or poor soil drainage. Once established, the fungus colonizes the internal tissues, disrupting the plant's vascular system and overall growth.
Symptoms of the disease vary but typically include necrotic spotting on fronds, petioles, and the main stem. A definitive diagnostic feature of Nalanthamala vermoesenii is the presence of a characteristic pink or salmon-colored powdery fungal growth on the surface of affected tissues during periods of high humidity. As the disease progresses, the central growing point may collapse, leading to the rotting of the crown and eventual plant death.
Disease outbreaks are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, lack of air circulation, and overhead irrigation, which facilitates the dispersal of spores. The pathogen survives in the soil and on debris, acting as a reservoir for recurring infections. It spreads readily through water splashing, contaminated tools, and, in some cases, infested potting media during the propagation phase.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Essential practices include strict sanitation, such as removing and destroying infected plant tissue and disinfecting all pruning tools between plants to prevent cross-contamination. Cultural controls should focus on improving air circulation, minimizing leaf wetness, and avoiding overhead irrigation. Furthermore, the strategic application of fungicides may be necessary to protect healthy plants and manage active outbreaks in susceptible collections.
