Nannizzia persicolor is an ascomycete fungus that is primarily known in medical contexts, yet in agricultural settings, it is identified as a soil-dwelling microorganism. While it functions as a saprotroph breaking down organic matter, it can become an opportunistic pathogen for various plant species under favorable conditions.

The pathogen is known for its ability to thrive in soil environments enriched with keratinaceous or complex plant debris. It belongs to the Arthroderma/Nannizzia complex, which often persists in the soil profile, creating potential risks for susceptible crops when environmental factors stress the host plants.

Crops most affected by such soil-borne pathogens often include vegetables and ornamental plants, particularly in greenhouse conditions where moisture levels are consistently high. The fungus attacks the root system, causing decay and preventing the plant from adequately absorbing essential nutrients from the soil.

Symptoms of infection generally include the browning and necrosis of the root tissues, stunted development, and the appearance of a characteristic fungal mat near the base of the stem. These symptoms may progress rapidly if the soil drainage is poor or if the soil temperature remains consistently warm.
