Description
The disease known as blueberry rust is caused by the fungus Naohidemyces vaccinii. This pathogen is a specific parasite that primarily affects the Ericaceae family, with highbush blueberries being the most susceptible and economically important host crop.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear on the leaves. Initially, small yellow spots develop on the upper leaf surface, which eventually expand and turn reddish-brown. On the underside of these spots, the fungus produces orange-colored pustules containing spores. These structures are the hallmark of rust fungi and are easily visible during the growing season.
The development and spread of the disease are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Rain and wind facilitate the dispersal of spores from infected plant tissues to healthy leaves. The pathogen can overwinter in fallen leaf litter, serving as a primary source of inoculum for the following season.
The economic impact of Naohidemyces vaccinii is significant, as severe infections lead to premature defoliation. This loss of foliage reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, which directly results in poor fruit development, reduced yields, and weakened cold hardiness of the bushes, making them vulnerable to winter damage.
Integrated management is essential for controlling this fungal disease. Cultural practices such as maintaining proper plant spacing to ensure good airflow and removing debris are fundamental. Chemical control involves the application of registered fungicides, such as those containing copper or systemic triazole compounds, timed appropriately to coincide with early symptoms or favorable infection weather.
