Naucoria is a genus of fungi that can act as opportunistic pathogens in agricultural settings. While primarily saprotrophic, these fungi often inhabit the rhizosphere and can compromise the health of plants by colonizing roots that have been weakened by environmental stress, poor soil aeration, or secondary infection by pests.

The disease caused by this pathogen is categorized as a basal or root rot. The fungus infects the root system and the root collar, gradually destroying the vascular tissues. This interruption of the plant's ability to transport water and essential minerals leads to progressive decline and stunted development of the affected crops.

Common signs of infestation include yellowing foliage, sudden wilting during periods of drought, and poor overall vigor. Growers may also observe the small, brown, agaric-type fruiting bodies appearing in the soil near the base of the plant, especially after periods of heavy rainfall, signaling a high level of fungal activity in the substrate.

A cool to moderate climate, paired with consistent dampness, facilitates the rapid expansion of mycelium, making crops in poorly drained fields particularly vulnerable.

  • ensuring adequate soil drainage;
  • avoiding excessive irrigation in heavy soils;
  • removing organic debris that may harbor the fungus;
  • applying biological fungicides such as Trichoderma species to balance the soil microbiome and prevent colonization by pathogenic organisms.
