Naucoria alnetorum is a species of fungus in the family Strophariaceae. While primarily recognized as a saprotrophic organism that thrives on decaying wood, it is frequently monitored by agronomists and foresters due to its association with wet, poorly drained habitats where it may interact with living host tissues.
The causative agent is the mycelium of Naucoria alnetorum. It is not considered an aggressive primary pathogen, but in the context of plant health, it is categorized as a wood-decay agent. It develops primarily on dead woody debris but can opportunistically colonize the root collars of weakened trees.
The primary hosts affected by this fungus are alder trees (Alnus species). In specialized forest nurseries or agroforestry systems where water tables are high, these trees may become susceptible to colonization if their natural physiological defenses are compromised by environmental stress or waterlogging.
Symptoms of presence include the emergence of small, brownish fruiting bodies around the base of the trunk. While the tree may appear healthy initially, the activity of the mycelium at the root zone can impair nutrient uptake and structural integrity, leading to gradual decline and potential vulnerability to other pests.
