Naucoria amarescens is a saprotrophic fungal species that primarily colonizes soil rich in organic matter. While it is not a primary pathogen of major food crops, it is a significant nuisance in turfgrass management, amenity landscapes, and horticultural environments, where it disrupts the aesthetic and biological quality of the turf surface.
The agent is a fungal mycelium that spreads through the upper soil horizon. As a saprotroph, it feeds on decaying plant debris, including lawn thatch. However, the accumulation of dense mycelial networks causes the soil to become hydrophobic, which effectively prevents irrigation and rainwater from reaching the plant roots, leading to physiological drought.
Turfgrass species such as Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, and Bentgrass are the most affected. Symptoms include the emergence of small, brownish mushrooms arranged in distinct circles or arcs, commonly known as fairy rings. Within these rings, grass typically appears yellowed or necrotic due to the lack of available moisture and the potential release of fungal metabolites.
The development and spread of Naucoria amarescens are favored by high humidity, moderate temperatures, and the presence of significant thatch layers in the soil. Poorly aerated soils with high organic accumulation provide an ideal substrate for mycelial expansion, particularly following prolonged rainy seasons which stimulate active mushroom production.
Protective measures focus on cultural practices to disrupt the fungal habitat and restore soil health:
- Regular dethatching and verticutting to minimize organic substrate accumulation.
- Consistent core aeration to improve water infiltration and oxygen exchange.
- Application of wetting agents to counter hydrophobic conditions caused by the fungus.
