Description

The genus Navicula consists of unicellular diatom algae that inhabit damp soil, water bodies, and greenhouse substrates. While not traditional pathogens, these algae can act as significant biological nuisances in agriculture by forming dense surface layers that disrupt the physiological balance of the soil-plant environment.

These algae typically proliferate in areas with excessive moisture, such as paddy fields, hydroponic systems, or poorly drained greenhouses. Their rapid growth creates a dense, film-like mat on the soil surface, which acts as a physical barrier against atmospheric oxygen, suffocating plant roots and preventing seedling emergence.

Symptoms of a Navicula bloom include a distinct reddish-brown or greenish crust covering the soil. The resulting oxygen starvation leads to leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, and a reduction in the plant's overall vigor, making crops more susceptible to secondary infections or environmental stress factors.

The development of these organisms is facilitated by over-irrigation, high nutrient concentrations—particularly nitrogen and phosphorus—and acidic soil conditions. In closed-environment farming, the lack of proper ventilation and constant saturation create ideal conditions for the rapid colonization of cultivation substrates.

Management and prevention focus on improving soil aeration and drainage. Regular cultivation, careful irrigation scheduling, and proper soil pH management are essential to limit the growth of Navicula. In severe cases, the application of targeted algaecides or biological control agents may be required to clear the crust and restore optimal soil surface respiration.
