Navicula pelliculosa is a unicellular diatom that commonly appears in aquatic environments, including hydroponic nutrient solutions. While not a pathogenic plant disease in the sense of fungal or bacterial infection, it acts as a nuisance organism that can significantly disrupt the operational efficiency of agricultural water systems.

The organism belongs to the Bacillariophyceae class. It thrives by absorbing minerals essential for crop development. When present in high concentrations, Navicula pelliculosa forms a brownish film or slime on the inner surfaces of irrigation pipes, emitters, and root systems, which can lead to system blockages and root hypoxia.

Crops most affected include greenhouse-grown vegetables and leafy greens in closed-loop irrigation systems. Symptomatic presence is characterized by slippery, film-like coatings on equipment and a reduction in nutrient availability for the plant, often leading to chlorosis or stunted growth due to competitive mineral uptake.

Environmental triggers for growth include high light exposure in nutrient reservoirs and elevated water temperatures. Even low-level nutrient enrichment in the water supply is sufficient to fuel the rapid reproduction of this diatom, making it a persistent challenge in uncontrolled greenhouse environments.

Prevention and management require a multi-faceted approach. Maintaining a sterile growing environment is key to keeping the diatom population in check. Agronomists recommend the following strategies:

  • Ensure all nutrient reservoirs are light-proof to inhibit photosynthesis.
  • Install UV sterilization units in the water recirculation loop.
  • Conduct periodic hydrogen peroxide or enzymatic flushes of irrigation lines.
