The order Naviculales refers to a large group of diatomaceous algae, which are not plant pathogens in the traditional sense but can act as significant bio-contaminants in specialized agriculture. They are aquatic organisms characterized by their silica cell walls and motility, often thriving in moist environments.

These organisms primarily affect crops grown in hydroponic systems and rice paddies. While they do not invade the plant tissue, they can create thick biofilms on root systems, causing physical stress and preventing the absorption of essential macro- and micronutrients by the plant roots.

Symptoms of an infestation include a brownish, slippery film covering the nutrient solution surface, irrigation pipes, and roots. This leads to reduced plant vigor, stunted development, and potential secondary issues such as root decay, which is caused by oxygen starvation beneath the algal mat.

The development of these diatoms is driven by high light exposure and nutrient-rich waters. They flourish in environments with high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. Maintaining a stable pH and temperature is crucial, as fluctuations often favor the proliferation of these organisms over the intended crop.

Management strategies focus on light exclusion, as diatoms rely on photosynthesis to survive. Using opaque reservoirs and piping is the most effective preventative measure. Additionally, producers should employ periodic sanitation of water lines using compatible algaecides or UV-light water filtration systems to maintain a sterile growing environment.
