Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Nectria camelliae, which is classified as an ascomycete. This infection primarily affects the bark and woody tissues, causing vascular disruption and tissue decay. It is recognized as a significant fungal pathogen that leads to the gradual decline and eventual death of branches if left unmanaged.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are various species of the genus Camellia. The fungus gains entry into the plant tissues through wounds, such as pruning cuts, insect damage, sunscald, or frost cracks in the bark. Once established, the mycelium spreads within the wood, blocking the transport of water and nutrients to the distal parts of the plant.

Typical symptoms include depressed, discolored lesions on the bark, which can eventually crack or peel. Over time, the affected area becomes girdled, leading to the withering and death of the branch beyond the infection site. On the necrotic surface, small orange or pinkish fruiting bodies (perithecia) of the fungus may appear, which release spores to infect adjacent tissues.

The development of Nectria camelliae is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures. Dense canopies and poor air circulation in the garden create a microclimate that is highly favorable for fungal spore germination and penetration into host tissue, leading to rapid disease spread.

The severity of this disease stems from the loss of structural integrity of the branches and the potential for total shrub death. Effective management and control strategies involve:

  • Aggressive pruning of all infected wood, ensuring cuts are made well into healthy tissue.
  • Sanitizing all pruning tools with a disinfectant solution between cuts to prevent spread.
  • Sealing large wounds with appropriate sealants to prevent secondary infection.
  • Improving plant spacing to enhance airflow and reduce canopy humidity.
  • Applying systemic or copper-based fungicides as a preventative measure during the growing season.
