Nectria canker of magnolia is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Nectria magnoliae. This fungus primarily affects the bark and vascular tissues of magnolia trees, leading to localized necrosis and, if left unchecked, the eventual decline of the plant's structural integrity and overall health.
The disease specifically targets members of the Magnolia genus. While it is particularly problematic in dense landscape plantings and nurseries, trees that have suffered from winter injury, drought stress, or improper pruning are significantly more susceptible to successful colonization by the fungal spores.
The key symptom of the infection is the development of sunken, discolored areas on the bark. As the disease advances, characteristic sporulating structures, which appear as small, bright orange or red pustules, emerge from the affected bark. These lesions often girdle branches, resulting in canopy dieback and the formation of deep, open cankers.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the dissemination of Nectria magnoliae. High humidity, prolonged wet periods, and moderate temperatures provide the ideal environment for the production and spread of fungal spores. Rain splashes and wind currents serve as primary vectors for distributing spores throughout the garden.

To mitigate damage, gardeners should prioritize strict sanitation by pruning out diseased wood, sterilizing tools between cuts, and applying protective fungicides during the growing season to prevent secondary infections.
