The disease affects a wide range of fruit trees, including apples, pears, and stone fruits, as well as various ornamental trees and shrubs. It is frequently observed on branches that have been weakened by environmental stressors, mechanical damage, or previous pest infestations.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear on the bark of twigs and branches, indicating the presence of the fungus within the wood.
- The formation of bright red or coral-colored fruiting bodies (perithecia) on the bark surface.
- Sunken necrotic lesions on branches that eventually lead to dieback.
- Wilting and death of distal parts of the infected branches.
