Description
The Nectriaceae family comprises a group of filamentous fungi that are notorious pathogens causing severe damage to a wide variety of plants. They are responsible for various diseases, including European canker, vascular wilt, and stem necrosis, significantly affecting both agricultural output and forest health. These fungi utilize complex survival strategies, allowing them to remain latent in host tissues until conditions are favorable for colonization.
These pathogens predominantly infect woody plants, such as pome and stone fruits, including apple, pear, and cherry trees. They are essentially wound parasites, meaning they invade tissues through cracks in the bark, pruning wounds, or frost damage. Once established, they can persist within the tree's vascular system or bark tissues for many years, slowly weakening the host plant and reducing its overall productivity.
Characteristic symptoms include the development of sunken, dark lesions on branches and trunks, often surrounded by swollen callus tissue as the tree attempts to wall off the infection. In more severe cases, these cankers can girdle the branches, causing them to die back. During wet periods, small, bright red or orange spherical fruiting bodies are visible on the surface of the lesions, signifying active spore production.
The spread of Nectriaceae is heavily dependent on moisture and temperature; spores are dispersed by rain splash, wind, and contaminated pruning tools. The pathogen overwinters within cankers on the tree, as well as in dead wood and fallen debris. High humidity and cool, damp springs provide the perfect environment for the pathogen to release spores and infect new growth, leading to rapid disease development throughout the orchard.
Effective management requires an integrated approach that prioritizes sanitation and tree health. Growers must remove and destroy any infected wood to reduce the local spore load. Ensuring wounds are protected with appropriate sealants after pruning is crucial to preventing infection. Regular applications of protective fungicides, particularly during the dormant season and early spring, remain the most reliable method for controlling the spread of these harmful fungi.
