Description
Nemania serpens is a species of ascomycete fungus in the family Xylariaceae. Although it is primarily known as a saprotrophic fungus that decomposes dead wood, it can act as a secondary pathogen, colonizing stressed or weakened living trees and accelerating wood degradation processes.
This fungus typically affects broad-leaved trees, such as beech, oak, hornbeam, and various fruit tree species. The pathogen enters the host through wounds, broken branches, or unsealed pruning cuts, where it initiates a decay process within the vascular system and heartwood of the tree.
The primary symptom of infection is the appearance of distinct, black, crust-like fruiting bodies (stromata) on the bark surface. These bodies are often elongated or serpentine, which gives the species its scientific name. Internally, the fungus causes a white rot, making the wood fibrous and soft, significantly reducing the structural integrity of the affected limb or trunk.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread of Nemania serpens include high atmospheric humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures. The fungus releases spores that are dispersed by wind and rain splashes. Trees that suffer from waterlogging, drought stress, or previous mechanical injury are particularly susceptible to colonization by this pathogen.
Effective management requires a combination of strict sanitation and good horticultural practice. All infected wood should be pruned and destroyed to prevent spore dispersal. Furthermore, all pruning cuts should be protected with antifungal sealants, and the overall vigor of the trees should be maintained through proper fertilization and pest management to bolster their natural defense mechanisms.
