Nematospora

Nematospora is a specialized plant disease caused by yeast-like fungi of the genus Nematospora (the most common species being Nematospora coryli). This pathogen belongs to a group of fungal infections often transmitted by insect pests that pierce the tissues of fruits, pods, or seeds during feeding.

The primary crops susceptible to this disease include legumes such as soybeans and beans, fruit trees like hazelnuts, apples, and pears, as well as various vegetable and berry species. The pathogen typically enters plant tissues through wounds inflicted by stink bugs, which act as primary vectors for the fungal spores.

A hallmark symptom of Nematospora infection is often referred to as "yeast spot." In legumes, affected seeds become darkened, shriveled, and develop a bitter taste. Inside the seeds or fruits, the fungus develops mycelium, causing significant degradation of internal tissues and a substantial reduction in seed viability.

The development of the infection is favored by warm and humid weather conditions, which are ideal for the activity of the insect vectors. Once inside the plant tissue, the fungus multiplies rapidly, forming yeast cell colonies that consume plant cellular contents, leading to localized necrosis and decay of the affected area.

The economic impact of Nematospora is primarily related to the loss of crop quality and market value. Contaminated seeds become unsuitable for human consumption or processing due to biochemical changes and poor seed vigor. If left uncontrolled, the disease can significantly reduce the overall yield of susceptible agricultural commodities.
