Neoalbatrellus is a genus of fungi that acts as a pathogen in various woody plant species, primarily causing root and basal decay. While often found in forest ecosystems, its role as a disease agent becomes significant when it colonizes vulnerable or stressed trees, leading to long-term degradation of the host's vitality and structural integrity.
The causative agent belongs to the Basidiomycota phylum. It functions as a wood-decay fungus that targets the root system and the lower trunk. By secreting specialized enzymes, the fungus breaks down complex organic compounds within the wood, effectively rotting the vascular tissues and compromising the plant's ability to uptake water and essential minerals.
Affected cultures primarily include coniferous trees and a range of deciduous species common in parks and forest stands. The disease spreads more aggressively in environments characterized by high soil moisture, poor drainage, and existing mechanical damage, which serves as a primary entry point for fungal spores to infiltrate the tree's defensive layers.
Symptoms of the disease are often progressive and include crown dieback, reduced annual growth, and significant yellowing or browning of the foliage. In more advanced stages, one may observe the development of fungal fruiting bodies at the base of the trunk or near the roots, as well as a noticeable softening of the bark and wood at the tree's base.

Key measures include maintaining tree health through proper fertilization, avoiding soil compaction around the root zone, and conducting systematic sanitary pruning. In cases of severe infection, removal of the affected trees, including the root stump, is necessary to prevent the spread of the pathogen to neighboring plants.
