Description

The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Neoascochyta graminicola. This pathogen is a well-known member of the fungal complex responsible for various leaf spot diseases in small grain cereals. As an ascomycete, it produces specialized fruiting bodies known as pycnidia, which serve as key identifiers during field inspections.

The primary hosts of this pathogen include various cereal crops such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats. The disease is distributed worldwide wherever these crops are cultivated. The pathogen is particularly successful at colonizing lower leaves near the soil surface, where microclimatic conditions are more stable and conducive to initial infection cycles.

Symptoms initially appear as small, irregular or oval-shaped spots that quickly develop pale centers with dark, necrotic margins. As the infection progresses, the centers of these lesions become dotted with dark pycnidia. The infected leaf tissue eventually loses its photosynthetic capability, turns yellow, and begins to dry out, often leading to premature senescence of the canopy.

The development and spread of Neoascochyta graminicola are highly dependent on high moisture levels, including prolonged leaf wetness, dew, or frequent rainfall. Favorable temperature ranges for fungal growth typically fall between 15°C and 22°C. The pycnidiospores produced within the lesions are easily disseminated by rain splash and wind, allowing the fungus to move rapidly through the crop canopy.

The economic impact of this disease is primarily seen in yield reduction caused by the loss of functional leaf area, which decreases grain fill and overall biomass production. Effective management strategies involve integrating cultural practices, such as crop rotation and tillage to bury crop debris, with chemical interventions like well-timed fungicide applications. Selecting resistant cultivars remains the most sustainable approach to long-term control.
