Wheat leaf spot caused by Neoascochyta triticicola is a significant fungal disease affecting various cereal crops. This pathogen specializes in colonizing leaf tissue, leading to structural damage and reduced crop vigor by hindering essential metabolic processes like photosynthesis.

The primary host for this pathogen is wheat (Triticum), including both winter and spring varieties. The fungus invades the leaf tissues, and under high disease pressure, it can also spread to leaf sheaths, stems, and glumes, causing widespread chlorosis and necrosis across the canopy.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, irregular or oval-shaped spots on the foliage. As the lesion matures, the center becomes pale or tan-colored, often surrounded by a darker margin. A diagnostic feature is the presence of pycnidia, which appear as minute black dots scattered within the necrotic zones of the leaves.

Epidemiological development is heavily dependent on moisture and moderate temperatures. The fungus overwinters on crop residues and infected seeds. During the growing season, conidia are dispersed by rain splashes, allowing the pathogen to move from the lower leaves to the upper canopy, especially during wet and humid periods.
