Neobulgaria is a genus of fungi belonging to the Helotiaceae family, which typically functions as a saprotroph or a weak parasite on the decaying wood of broad-leaved trees. The most commonly documented species in forestry and agricultural settings is Neobulgaria pura, which colonizes branches and trunks of weakened or dying woody plants.
The pathogen is an ascomycete fungus that thrives on dead organic matter. Its mycelium penetrates the host tree through wounds, fissures, or pruning cuts, gradually degrading the wood structure. While not always a primary aggressive parasite, it plays a significant role in the accelerated decomposition of weakened timber, thereby hindering the natural recovery of affected trees.
Common hosts for this fungus include species like beech, birch, maple, and sometimes orchard trees when their vitality is low. The most recognizable symptom is the appearance of gelatinous, disk-shaped fruiting bodies on the bark. These structures are typically convex, translucent, and range in color from pale blue to colorless or yellowish, becoming quite conspicuous in moist conditions.
The development of Neobulgaria is highly dependent on environmental humidity and the availability of suitable substrate. The fungus spreads rapidly in humid, shaded environments where moisture persists on the bark surface. Spores are disseminated by wind and rain splashes, settling into existing mechanical wounds or bark crevices, which allows the fungus to establish its colony within the tree tissue.
Effective protection and prevention rely on maintaining tree vigor and minimizing pathways for infection. Recommended management practices include:
- Performing regular sanitary pruning to remove dead or diseased branches.
- Applying wound dressings or sealants to pruning cuts to prevent colonization.
