Neobulgaria pura is a species of fungus in the Helotiaceae family, often found on decaying deciduous wood. While primarily saprotrophic, it can act as a weak parasite, colonizing stressed or damaged areas on living trees and contributing to the degradation of bark and sapwood tissues.
The host range of this fungus includes various hardwood trees, most notably beech, oak, and birch. It tends to colonize limbs and trunks that have suffered mechanical damage, such as frost cracks, wounds from branch breakage, or improper pruning cuts, which provide entry points for the fungal mycelium.
The presence of the pathogen is marked by its characteristic gelatinous apothecia. These fruiting bodies are typically pale, translucent, or pinkish-tan in color, appearing in clusters on the surface of the wood. During wet periods, they swell and become quite conspicuous, particularly within the crevices of the tree bark.
