This fungus acts as a parasitic organism that colonizes the bark and cambium layers of woody plants. It is known primarily for its ability to induce localized necroses, which under favorable conditions can lead to more severe systemic damage to the host.

The disease affects a wide range of woody plants, including various deciduous fruit trees and ornamental shrubs. Neoconiothyrium multiporum is particularly noteworthy for its presence in orchards where host trees may have been compromised by environmental stress or previous mechanical injury, providing an entry point for the fungal spores.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as the appearance of minute, dark pycnidia—the fruiting bodies of the fungus—on the surface of the bark. As the disease progresses, the surrounding bark tissues exhibit discoloration, cracking, and eventual necrotic lesions. This often leads to girdling of twigs or branches, which ultimately causes wilting and death of the distal parts of the tree.

Once established, the pathogen spreads rapidly across a canopy, especially in orchards with poor air circulation or overcrowding, where the microclimate remains consistently damp.
