The disease is caused by the fungus Neoconiothyrium viticola, a pathogen that specifically targets grapevine tissues. It is a known factor in the development of necrotic lesions on woody parts of the vine, often complicating the overall health of the vineyard and mimicking symptoms of other localized fungal infections.
The primary host for this pathogen is the cultivated grapevine (Vitis vinifera). The infection typically attacks shoots, canes, and older woody branches, where it disrupts the vascular integrity of the plant, potentially leading to long-term decline in vigor and structural integrity of the vine.
Symptomatic development includes the formation of small, irregular dark spots on the bark of canes. As the infection progresses, these lesions can expand and cause the bark to crack or flake off. Under high-humidity conditions, the pathogen produces pycnidia, which appear as minute black specks embedded within the necrotic tissue, serving as reservoirs for inoculum.
The pathogen thrives in environments characterized by high rainfall and prolonged periods of leaf wetness.
