Description

Neocosmospora awan is a soil-borne fungal pathogen responsible for causing vascular wilts and root rot in a variety of horticultural and field crops. Formerly associated with the Fusarium solani species complex, this fungus disrupts the hydraulic function of the plant by colonizing the xylem, leading to water stress and eventual plant death.

The host range of Neocosmospora awan includes various economically significant plants such as tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. The infection process typically initiates in the rhizosphere, where fungal spores germinate and penetrate the roots, especially when the plant's defense system is compromised by abiotic stress or mechanical wounding.

Visible symptoms manifest as progressive chlorosis, wilting of the lower leaves, and severe stunting. One of the most diagnostic features is the internal browning of the stem's vascular bundles, which indicates that the fungus has successfully invaded the transport system, obstructing the flow of water and essential nutrients from the roots to the foliage.

Development of the disease is heavily favored by warm, humid soil conditions. Because the fungus can persist for extended periods in the soil through the production of dormant chlamydospores, it presents a long-term threat to greenhouse production and open-field agriculture alike, often requiring intensive soil management to mitigate the inoculum load.
