Neocucurbitaria aquatica is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Pleosporales order, primarily recognized for its association with wet environmental conditions. While it is a specialized organism, it has been identified as a causative agent of various plant diseases, affecting both aquatic vegetation and specific horticultural crops that thrive in high-moisture settings.
The fungus targets the vegetative components of the host, including leaves, stems, and occasionally the root crown. Agricultural crops such as certain vegetables are particularly vulnerable when grown in greenhouses with poor humidity management or in waterlogged field conditions, allowing the pathogen to gain easy access to host tissues.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as necrotic lesions that begin as small, discolored spots. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often turning dark brown or black due to the development of fungal pycnidia. Advanced stages of the disease lead to chlorosis, premature wilting of leaves, and significant structural weakening of the plant stems, often causing lodging.
Development and spread of the pathogen are highly favored by high relative humidity, frequent rainfall, or overhead irrigation that leaves water on the foliage for extended periods. The fungus survives in soil debris and infected plant tissues, spreading its spores through wind currents, splashing rain, and contaminated farming equipment.
Effective management requires a combination of strict sanitation and preventative agronomic practices to halt the fungal lifecycle:
- Improving soil drainage to prevent stagnant water around plant roots.
- Removing and destroying infected plant debris to reduce initial inoculum.
- Applying preventive fungicides during periods of high humidity and rainfall.
- Practicing crop rotation to prevent the buildup of fungal spores in the soil.
