Description

Neodeightonia is a genus of fungi within the Botryosphaeriaceae family that functions as a significant plant pathogen. These fungi are known for causing various types of wood and bark diseases, often resulting in systemic decline, branch dieback, and canker formation in a wide range of woody hosts across different climatic zones.

The fungus affects numerous important crops, including grapevines, apple trees, peaches, mangoes, and various citrus species. It is considered an opportunistic pathogen, often colonizing tissues weakened by environmental stresses like drought, excessive heat, or physical damage, eventually leading to severe vascular dysfunction in the plant.

Symptoms typically manifest as depressed, necrotic lesions on branches and stems, which may lead to bark cracking and gummosis. As the fungus progresses through the cambium and xylem tissues, the disrupted nutrient and water flow causes wilting and chlorosis of the canopy, eventually leading to the death of affected branches or the entire plant.

Development and spread are primarily driven by environmental conditions such as high humidity and elevated temperatures. The fungal spores are dispersed via wind, rain splash, and contaminated pruning equipment. These spores gain entry into the plant through pruning wounds, natural fissures, or lesions caused by abiotic factors, initiating the infection cycle.
