Description
Causative agent and type of disease. Neodeightonia phoenicum is an ascomycete fungus responsible for severe decay in palm species. It acts as a primary pathogen, attacking stems, leaf petioles, and root systems. The fungus survives in decaying organic matter and plant debris, producing spores that infect healthy tissue when environmental conditions become favorable for fungal growth.
Susceptible crops. The disease primarily affects members of the Arecaceae family, including various species of date palms and ornamental palms. It is a significant threat in nurseries, botanical gardens, and indoor horticultural settings where high plant density and specific microclimates favor the rapid spread of the pathogen among healthy individuals.
Symptoms and signs of infection. Infected plants initially display dark, water-soaked lesions on the lower trunk or petiole bases. As the disease progresses, these lesions expand into soft, brown rot, often accompanied by an unpleasant odor. In the advanced stages, the fungus produces small black fruiting bodies called pycnidia on the surface of the infected areas, which serve as a sign of active sporulation.
Development and severity. The development of Neodeightonia phoenicum is strongly correlated with high humidity, poor air circulation, and waterlogged soil conditions. The severity of this disease is high; the rot destroys the plant's vascular system, disrupting water and nutrient transport. Without immediate management, the palm will suffer from rapid chlorosis, wilting of the fronds, and eventually complete plant death.

- Sterilize pruning tools after each cut to prevent cross-contamination.

Control and prevention measures. Effective management focuses on cultural practices and strict sanitation. It is essential to avoid mechanical damage to the trunk, as these wounds provide easy entry points for the pathogen. If the infection is detected early, the decayed tissue should be surgically removed until healthy tissue is reached, followed by the application of antifungal treatments to the wound sites.
