Neofusicoccum is a genus of ascomycetous fungi belonging to the Botryosphaeriaceae family. These pathogens are widely recognized for causing various types of dieback, canker, and shoot blight diseases in a broad range of woody plants, significantly impacting the productivity of orchards and vineyards.

The fungus affects numerous important crops, including grapevines, stone fruits such as peaches and apricots, pome fruits, and various ornamental species. It infects host tissues primarily through wounds caused by pruning, environmental stress, or insect activity. Once inside, the fungus colonizes the xylem, interrupting the flow of water and nutrients to the branches.

Symptoms typically manifest as localized lesions on stems and branches, leading to the formation of cankers and cracks in the bark. Infected shoots often show sudden wilting and dieback. A characteristic sign of the disease is the appearance of small, dark, pimple-like structures on the bark surface, known as pycnidia, which release spores that facilitate the spread of the infection.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of Neofusicoccum. The pathogen is highly opportunistic, meaning it thrives when plants are under stress from drought, extreme temperatures, or improper irrigation. High humidity and rainfall facilitate the dispersal of spores via splashing water, which can quickly spread the disease throughout a plantation.

Effective management requires a combination of strict cultural and chemical practices. Crucial steps include sanitizing pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination, removing and destroying infected plant material, and ensuring trees receive adequate hydration and nutrition. Preventive fungicide applications, particularly during the growing season and after pruning, are essential to protect open wounds from fungal colonization.
