Neofusicoccum australe is a significant fungal pathogen belonging to the Botryosphaeriaceae family, notorious for causing various trunk and branch diseases in woody plants. This fungus acts as an opportunistic pathogen, often colonizing plant tissues asymptomatically until the host is compromised by environmental stresses such as heat, drought, or nutrient deficiency.
The host range of Neofusicoccum australe is extensive, impacting both agricultural and horticultural sectors. It is particularly damaging to grapevine cultivars, a variety of stone and pome fruits, as well as several tree species like eucalypts. In orchards and vineyards, it serves as a key agent in the complex of trunk diseases that reduce the lifespan of productive plantations.
The characteristic signs of infection involve the development of necrotic lesions on the bark, which can evolve into deep cankers. When infected wood is cross-sectioned, growers often observe necrotic streaks or wedge-shaped discoloration in the xylem. These internal lesions restrict the upward flow of water and nutrients, eventually leading to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and total dieback of the affected branches.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the dissemination of the pathogen. Spores are primarily dispersed by rainfall and wind, making wet seasons particularly high-risk periods for new infections. The fungus easily gains entry through fresh pruning wounds, winter-damaged tissues, or scars left by insects, allowing it to penetrate deeper into the vascular tissue of the host.
