The pathogen Neofusicoccum buxi is an ascomycete fungus known for causing significant dieback and canker diseases in various woody plants. It primarily functions as a opportunistic pathogen that thrives on compromised or stressed plant tissue, eventually spreading to healthy branches if environmental conditions remain favorable.
The primary host for this disease is boxwood (Buxus species). While it is common in nursery settings, it also poses a serious threat to landscape plants, particularly those maintained in dense hedges or elaborate topiary designs where plant stress and humidity levels are often elevated.
Symptoms typically start with the yellowing and wilting of leaves on individual branches, which then turn brown and brittle. A critical diagnostic feature is the presence of cankers or necrotic, darkened lesions on the bark. As these lesions expand, they girdle the stems, effectively cutting off the vascular supply and leading to sudden dieback.
Environmental triggers include high relative humidity, prolonged leaf wetness, and moderate temperatures. The fungus colonizes the plant through natural openings or physical wounds caused by freezing temperatures, insect feeding, or improper pruning practices. Stressed plants with poor soil drainage are significantly more susceptible to infection.
Management requires a holistic approach focused on sanitation and cultural control. This includes removing and destroying infected plant material, disinfecting pruning tools between cuts, and improving air circulation around the plants. In severe cases, the application of appropriate fungicides can help suppress fungal activity, though preventative maintenance remains the most effective strategy.
