Neofusicoccum laricinum
Description
Neofusicoccum laricinum is an ascomycetous fungus responsible for significant shoot blight and stem necrosis in various larch species. This pathogen is known for its ability to infect living tissues, causing structural damage that affects the plant's vascular system. As a latent pathogen, it can sometimes persist in host tissues without causing immediate outward symptoms until the tree is stressed.
The primary hosts of this fungus are trees within the Larix genus. It is particularly damaging to young plantations and forest nurseries where moisture levels are often conducive to fungal proliferation. The presence of the pathogen has been documented in various geographic regions, often coinciding with specific climate patterns that favor fungal growth.
Common clinical signs of the infection include localized darkening of the bark, which eventually collapses into sunken necrotic lesions. Exudation of resin is a frequent reaction by the host in an attempt to contain the infection, though this often fails. Foliage on the affected shoots eventually turns yellow or brown, leading to premature needle drop and the progressive dieback of branches.
The development and spread of Neofusicoccum laricinum are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as prolonged periods of rainfall and moderate temperatures. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind and splashing water, landing on susceptible bark surfaces or entering through minor wounds. Trees already compromised by drought, pests, or nutrient deficiencies are significantly more susceptible to infection.
The economic and ecological impact of this disease is linked to the loss of growth, canopy thinning, and in severe cases, the mortality of entire specimens. Management requires a combination of silvicultural practices and chemical control:
- Removal and destruction of infected twigs to reduce inoculum;
- Maintaining proper tree spacing to improve airflow;
- Applying appropriate fungicides in nursery settings;
- Monitoring tree health to identify early symptoms.
