The genus Neolentinus comprises a group of wood-decaying basidiomycetes recognized as significant agents of brown rot. These fungi play a critical role in forest ecosystems as decomposers, but in agricultural and forestry contexts, they are treated as plant pathogens that can compromise the structural integrity of valuable timber and living trees.
These fungi primarily target coniferous tree species, including pines and spruces. Neolentinus typically infects trees through wounds in the bark caused by mechanical damage, wind, or improper pruning. Once the mycelium establishes itself within the host, it begins to degrade cellulose and lignin, severely affecting the wood quality.
The characteristic symptoms of a Neolentinus infection include the emergence of leathery, distinctively shaped fruiting bodies on the surface of the bark. Internally, the wood becomes brittle and develops a dark brown discoloration. This decay process is destructive, often rendering the wood useless for construction or industrial purposes and increasing the risk of structural collapse of the tree.
Favorable conditions for the development of these fungi include high ambient humidity, poor air circulation, and warm temperatures. The fungus spreads rapidly in dense stands where moisture accumulates on bark surfaces. Furthermore, the presence of untreated wounds makes the trees highly susceptible to colonization by airborne spores.
Protecting trees from Neolentinus requires a combination of strict sanitation and preventive care. Key management practices include the immediate removal of infected wood, proper pruning techniques, and the application of fungicides or protective sealants to all mechanical wounds. Maintaining stand vigor through proper spacing and thinning also helps minimize the humidity levels that favor fungal growth.
