The fungus affects a variety of tree species, predominantly conifers like pine and spruce, but it is also found on deciduous trees such as oak and birch. It colonizes weakened trees, standing deadwood, fallen trunks, and old stumps, playing a significant role in forest decomposition cycles.

The visible signs of infestation include the presence of leathery, funnel-shaped or fan-shaped fruiting bodies that grow directly from the wood surface. The wood beneath the fruiting body shows clear signs of decay, appearing shrunken, darkened, and prone to breaking into small, brittle cubes.

The development of this fungus is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. Transmission occurs primarily through airborne spores, which can travel long distances to colonize new substrates through cracks in the bark, fresh wounds, or logging cuts.

Effective management and prevention strategies include maintaining healthy forest stands to reduce host susceptibility. It is crucial to perform regular sanitary harvests to remove heavily infected trees and stumps, which act as reservoirs for the fungus. Applying wound dressings on large tree injuries can also help prevent initial colonization.
