Neonectria hederae is a fungal pathogen belonging to the ascomycetes, known for causing cankers and tissue necrosis in ivy species. This fungus invades the vascular system and bark of the host, leading to disrupted nutrient transport and significant structural damage to the stems.

The primary host for this disease is English ivy (Hedera helix). It is frequently observed in nursery settings, greenhouse environments, or dense landscape plantings where the canopy remains moist and air circulation is limited, providing an ideal microclimate for the pathogen's growth.

Symptoms initially appear as dark, sunken spots on the stems and petioles. As the disease progresses, these spots develop into elongated cankers that cause the bark to crack or die. Under high humidity, small, orange-to-red fruiting bodies (perithecia) of the fungus may emerge from the necrotic tissue.

Environmental conditions are the main drivers of disease propagation. Prolonged rainy weather, high relative humidity, and poor airflow are critical factors. The fungal spores are primarily dispersed by splashing water, rain droplets, or contaminated pruning tools, entering the plant through natural openings or mechanical wounds.

The economic and aesthetic impact of Neonectria hederae is significant, as it leads to twig blight and the eventual death of individual stems or entire plants. In dense vertical ivy growth, an outbreak can spread rapidly, causing patches of brown, dying foliage that ruin the visual appearance of the landscaping.

  • Improving site conditions by thinning out foliage to enhance air circulation.
  • Sanitizing pruning shears with a disinfectant solution between cuts.
