Description
The causal agent of this disease is the ascomycete fungus Neonectria neomacrospora (formerly known as Nectria fuckeliana). It functions as a parasitic organism that invades the bark and cambium layers of woody plants. This infection leads to necrotic lesions, effectively disrupting the vascular system of the affected branches or stems.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are conifers, with a particular affinity for species within the Abies (fir) and Picea (spruce) genera. While it can affect mature trees, it poses a significant threat to saplings and young stands in nurseries, where the environment may be conducive to rapid fungal colonization.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as chlorosis and premature shedding of needles. As the fungus colonizes the tree, distinct cankers or depressions form on the bark. During humid conditions, observers can identify the presence of the pathogen by the small, bright orange to reddish perithecia clustered near the necrotic areas.
The spread and development of the fungus are highly dependent on moisture and moderate temperatures. Rain splash and wind are the primary vectors for spore dissemination. Areas with poor air circulation, high planting density, and existing physical damage to the bark are significantly more susceptible to outbreaks.
The disease causes substantial damage, leading to dieback of branches and, in severe cases, the death of the entire tree. Effective management and prevention strategies include:
- Sanitary pruning and immediate removal of infected branches or dead wood.
- Sterilization of pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination between trees.
- Reduction of stand density to improve airflow and reduce humidity levels.
- Application of specialized fungicides in nursery settings during high-risk weather windows.
