Description

Neopestalotiopsis is a genus of pathogenic fungi that causes severe necrotic diseases in a wide range of horticultural and agricultural crops. As a significant threat to modern farming, these fungi are known for causing leaf spots, shoot blights, and fruit rots that can devastate crop yields if not managed properly.

This pathogen primarily targets berries, especially strawberries and blueberries, but it has also been documented on grapes, citrus fruits, tea plants, and various ornamental trees. Its ability to infect multiple parts of the plant makes it a highly destructive agent in both nurseries and open-field production systems.

Typical symptoms of Neopestalotiopsis include the formation of V-shaped or irregular necrotic lesions on leaves, which often develop a chlorotic halo. As the disease progresses, small black structures known as acervuli appear within the lesions, releasing fungal spores. Infected fruit often becomes soft, discolored, and eventually turns into a shriveled mass.

The development of the disease is heavily favored by warm, humid conditions, typically between 20°C and 30°C, and frequent rainfall. Transmission occurs primarily through contaminated nursery stock, water splash during heavy rains or overhead irrigation, and movement of equipment or personnel across infected areas, allowing the spores to spread rapidly.

Effective management requires an integrated approach focusing on exclusion and sanitation. Maintaining plant health through proper nutrition and avoiding excessive canopy humidity is crucial for disease prevention.
