Neophaeosphaeria is a genus of ascomycetous fungi known for acting as plant pathogens that cause various necrotic spots and blights. These fungi are particularly notable in agricultural environments for their ability to thrive on crop residues, posing a persistent threat to cereal production and other field crops throughout the growing season.

The primary hosts for this pathogen include various cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and triticale. By infecting the leaves, stems, and sheath tissues, the fungus disrupts the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis efficiently, which ultimately leads to reduced biomass accumulation and significant losses in final grain yield and quality.

Symptoms typically begin as small chlorotic lesions that gradually enlarge, turning brown or greyish-brown as the tissue dies. A distinctive sign of the disease is the presence of small, dark fruiting bodies (pycnidia or pseudothecia) embedded in the infected leaf tissue, which serve as a visual diagnostic marker and a source of future inoculum.

The development and spread of Neophaeosphaeria are heavily dependent on climatic conditions, specifically high humidity, leaf wetness, and moderate temperatures. Rain splash and wind are the primary mechanisms for spore dispersal, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly across a field, especially in dense crop canopies where air circulation is restricted.
