The family Neophaeosphaeriaceae represents a group of ascomycetous fungi known as significant plant pathogens. These fungi are capable of colonizing various plant species, often causing severe leaf spots, necrotic lesions, and overall decline in plant health, which is a major concern for modern agricultural practice.

The disease is caused by fungal agents that attack the vegetative organs of the host plant. The primary crops affected by these pathogens are cereals, such as wheat and barley. The infection cycle often begins with the colonization of leaf tissue, eventually spreading to stems and other parts, causing systemic stress to the crop.
