Neophloeospora is a fungal genus responsible for various leaf spot diseases in plants. As a plant pathogen, it primarily affects the foliage of woody and herbaceous species, causing localized necrosis. The disease is characterized by its ability to persist in plant debris, making it a recurring issue in orchards and plantations if proper sanitation measures are not followed.

The host range of Neophloeospora includes various deciduous trees and shrub species. The fungus establishes itself by invading the host tissues, where it consumes nutrients and disrupts the photosynthetic apparatus. This leads to impaired plant vigor, reduced growth rates, and, in severe cases, the death of individual leaves or shoots.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, irregular or circular spots on the leaf surface. As the fungal colonies mature, the spots may darken and develop distinct margins. In conditions of high humidity, tiny fruiting bodies (acervuli) appear within these spots, releasing spores that serve as secondary inoculum for the rapid spread of the disease throughout the canopy.

Wind and rain splash play critical roles in disseminating the fungal spores to neighboring healthy leaves. The pathogen typically overwinters in infected fallen leaves, serving as the primary source of infection in the following spring.

Management of this disease requires a strategic combination of preventive and curative practices. Essential control measures include:

  • Sanitation: Removing and destroying all fallen leaves and infected plant debris.
  • Canopy Management: Pruning to improve airflow and reduce humidity around the foliage.
