Neophysopella ampelopsidis

Description

The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Neophysopella ampelopsidis, a member of the Basidiomycota phylum. This obligate parasite specifically targets the green tissues of grapevines, causing a condition known as grapevine rust. The fungus draws nutrients directly from the host cells, significantly disrupting the metabolic processes of the vine.

The primary host plants are species of the genus Vitis (grapevines) and Ampelopsis. The disease primarily attacks leaves, though it can also infect young shoots and leaf petioles. By reducing the effective leaf surface area, the pathogen impairs the plant’s ability to conduct photosynthesis, leading to reduced overall vigor.

Symptoms are identified by the appearance of reddish-brown or yellowish pustules on the undersides of the leaves. As the infection progresses, corresponding chlorotic spots form on the upper surfaces. In cases of severe infection, leaves will turn yellow, wilt prematurely, and drop from the vine, which leaves the plant vulnerable to winter damage and physiological stress.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungal spores are easily disseminated by wind or splashing water, enabling rapid spread throughout a vineyard. Dense foliage and poor airflow significantly increase the likelihood of the pathogen establishing itself within the canopy.

The economic impact of grapevine rust stems from reduced yield, impaired sugar accumulation in grapes, and poor winter hardiness of the vines. Effective management involves improving vineyard ventilation through proper pruning and canopy management. When necessary, protective fungicide sprays, including copper-based products or systemic triazoles, should be applied to prevent severe outbreaks and maintain crop health.
