Description
Neophysopella tropicalis is a fungal pathogen responsible for fig rust, a disease that significantly impacts various species of the Ficus genus. This fungus is a specialized parasite that targets the foliage, interfering with the plant's ability to produce energy and affecting its overall ornamental health.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are Ficus plants, which are widely cultivated in both tropical outdoor environments and controlled greenhouse conditions. In garden centers or indoor collections, this fungus can quickly become an epidemic if environmental conditions are left uncontrolled.
The characteristic symptoms of the disease include the appearance of small, yellow to chlorotic spots on the upper side of the leaf. On the underside, these spots develop into raised pustules containing spores. As the infection progresses, these pustules release a rust-colored powdery substance, which gives the disease its common name.
Development and spread of Neophysopella tropicalis are highly dependent on humidity levels and air temperature. The fungus thrives in warm and wet conditions, where free water on leaf surfaces facilitates the germination of fungal spores. Wind, splashing water from irrigation, and contaminated tools act as the main vectors for dissemination.
Management of fig rust involves an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as improving air circulation, reducing overhead irrigation, and removing infected leaves are essential. If an outbreak occurs, fungicide applications using systemic products that target rust fungi are recommended to suppress spore production and protect healthy leaf tissue.
