Description

Neophysopella vitis is a fungal pathogen responsible for the disease known as grapevine rust. This fungus specifically targets the foliage of grapevines, potentially impacting the physiological vigor of the plant by disrupting photosynthesis and accelerating the senescence of leaves.

The primary host for this disease is the grapevine (Vitis spp.). While it may not always cause total crop failure, the infection can significantly reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the canopy, which is critical for proper fruit development, sugar accumulation, and successful lignification of the canes before winter dormancy.

The disease is characterized by the appearance of yellowish-brown spots on the upper leaf surface. The diagnostic feature of the infection is the development of rust-colored pustules (uredinia) on the underside of the leaves. These pustules break through the epidermis to release large quantities of spores, leading to secondary infection cycles throughout the season.

The development and spread of Neophysopella vitis are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly prolonged leaf wetness, high humidity, and moderate temperatures. Dense canopies that restrict airflow and increase the duration of moisture retention on foliage create a highly conducive environment for rapid disease progression.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural practices and chemical control to minimize inoculum levels. Key strategies include:

  • proper canopy management to enhance airflow and light penetration;
  • sanitation practices, such as the removal of fallen leaves during the dormant season;
  • regular field inspections to detect early signs of infection;
  • the application of appropriate fungicides, particularly in regions with historical occurrences of the disease.
