The primary hosts of this fungus are various species within the Pinaceae family, with a notable incidence in pines (Pinus spp.). It is particularly problematic in dense plantation settings, nurseries, and ornamental plantings where environmental conditions can be conducive to rapid spread.

The visual symptoms of the disease typically begin as small, discolored spots on the needles. As the fungus progresses, these spots expand, often merging into larger, brownish-grey necrotic lesions.
