The disease is caused by the fungus Neopyrenochaeta inflorescentiae, a pathogen primarily targeting the reproductive parts of specific plant species. This organism thrives by colonizing plant tissues and inducing necrosis, which severely impairs the plant's aesthetic and reproductive functions. It is categorized as a fungal-induced necrotic leaf and flower blight.
Host plants typically include various ornamental species and certain horticultural crops sensitive to high humidity. The fungus shows a strong preference for inflorescences, where it can rapidly destroy developing buds and open flowers. Occasionally, it also affects the foliage, particularly the lower leaves that have direct contact with the soil surface.
Diagnostic symptoms include the formation of dark, necrotic spots that appear on the petals and florets. These spots gradually expand, causing the tissue to shrivel and discolor. In advanced stages, the entire flower head may become blighted, leading to complete flower abortion and significant loss of decorative value for the affected plants.
