Neosetophoma is a genus of fungi associated with various necrotic diseases in plants. As a phytopathogenic agent, it impacts both woody species and herbaceous crops, functioning as a necrotroph that invades host tissues, leading to lesions and subsequent structural degradation of the plant material.

The host range is diverse, primarily affecting trees, shrubs, and certain agricultural cereals. The infection often targets leaves and stems, utilizing natural openings or previous mechanical damage to establish itself within the vascular or epidermal tissues of the susceptible host plant.

Key symptoms include the development of localized chlorotic or necrotic spots, which eventually transition into brown or grey lesions. Upon closer inspection, small, dark, flask-shaped pycnidia become visible on the surface of the infected tissue, representing the reproductive phase of the fungus that facilitates the spread of conidia.

The spread of Neosetophoma is heavily dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. Rain splash and wind are the primary vectors for dispersing spores from infected plant debris to healthy neighbors, making dense planting conditions particularly vulnerable to rapid outbreaks.
