The genus Neottiella comprises a group of discomycete fungi that are primarily recognized as colonizers of moist environments. In an agricultural context, while they are not typically aggressive pathogens of commercial crops, their presence often signals suboptimal soil management and environmental imbalances that can affect overall plant health.

The pathogen thrives by forming bright orange or yellow apothecia on the soil surface or within moss colonies. As a facultative parasite or saprotroph, the fungus extracts nutrients from bryophytes, effectively displacing beneficial moss populations and altering the surface characteristics of the growing medium.

The primary victims of this fungus are mosses in humid, shaded areas of nurseries, greenhouses, or garden beds. When Neottiella dominates an area, it can change the micro-environment, potentially creating conditions that favor other, more dangerous root pathogens by increasing surface moisture retention.

Optimal conditions for development include consistently high humidity, poor soil drainage, and lack of adequate airflow. The fungus spreads via airborne or water-dispersed spores, which quickly colonize wet, nutrient-rich substrates, especially in environments where evaporation is restricted.

Effective prevention and control measures focus on environmental modification rather than chemical intervention. Improving drainage, increasing light exposure, and ensuring proper ventilation are key to suppressing growth. Manual removal of infected substrate layers and fruit bodies is the most recommended non-chemical approach to reduce the pathogen population.
